It’s A Match! Upskilling Strengthened this Civil Engineer’s Opportunities

Phyo is an experienced Civil Engineer from Myanmar. But in Germany she was having a hard time finding a job. After adding software development skills to her curriculum at ReDI School, Phyo is now working as a Civil Engineer at Nutsch Ingenieure GmbH, aiding other Engineers and Architects in designing calculations and renderings.

- This is a short interview where Phyo shares her career journey in a new country.

ReDI: At ReDI, you studied Computer Basics and Intro to Computer Science. Why did you choose ReDI School?

Phyo: I heard about ReDI School from my friend, Annet, who was also one of ReDI's students. I chose ReDI because ReDI offered a mentorship program and a special program for women from basics to more advanced courses.

What finally convinced me: every course is free and ReDI provides free laptops for each student, not only during our course, but also some time after the course to use personally, to find a job and other opportunities.

ReDI: What was your goal, when you started with ReDI?

Phyo: I wanted to improve my technical know-how of computers and digital devices. Nowadays, to get a good job, we have to be not only familiar with, but also skilled with computers and digital devices, in order to handle programs such as: Microsoft Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, PDF, Office), Internet, Search Engines (Google, Chrome, Firefox, Yahoo, YouTube, etc...), Social Media (Facebook,  Instagram, etc...).

ReDI: Did you take part in any career related workshops (CV training, mock interviews, company visits, mentoring)?

Phyo: Yes, I took part in a CV training and went on company visits. This helped me gain confidence and prepare for the tech world in Germany.

“ReDI's mentorship program helped me apply to and prepare my entrance exams for university as well as apply for job interviews. Thanks to ReDI, I got my current job.”

ReDI: What are you doing now?

Phyo: I am working as a Civil Engineer in Nutsch Ingenieure GmbH. My work is related with technology, because we use so many engineering programs and software for Civil Engineers and Architects to draw, design, detail, plan and to calculate structure design. These software applications are generated by programming languages.

ReDI: How were your first weeks at your new job?

Phyo: My first week at my new job in Germany was so exciting, but also difficult due to the German language.  I am learning and improving every single day, although sometimes I still have difficulty to understand technical terms and engineering usages in German.

ReDI: What do you want to achieve in your career journey?

Phyo: I want to be professional and knowledgeable in all aspects of my career and technical field. So I will continue to pursue professional training and technical development until I can share my knowledge and help others.

I will always be in touch with ReDI School!

ReDI School: Thank you Phyo! You will always be a part of our ReDI Community. We wish you continued success at work and in your personal achievements as well.
